The AASHO/ Federal system is founded on the Wisconsin model, but doesn’t reach fruition until 1926. Between these years, in 1923 the Association of State Highway Departments took on the chore of standardizing the road sign. WebBecause of his experiences, President Eisenhower fought hard to get Congress to pass the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956. For that reason, he is called “The Father of the Interstate System.” To honor him for that “personal and absolute decision,” Congress passed a bill in 1990 that changed the legal name of the Interstate System.
