She received a Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale University and is the author of Commerce and Culture: The Maritime Communities of Colonial Massachusetts, 1690-1750. She graduated from Macalester College in 1971, and from Yale University with a Ph.D. in 1977. She is Grimble Professor of American History at the University of Delaware. Her current research focuses on the first cohort of American Protestant missionaries in the Middle East (1820–1860).
